This course is designed to take students through the pottery process using earthenware clay and glaze. You will be shown how to shape and form clay using hand building pottery techniques. Pinching, coiling, slabbing. Explore and use different methods of adding surface pattern and texture to clay with the use of tools, stamps and working in relief. Develop skills in the application of brush on glazes to add colour and pattern to clay work. Students will have an opportunity to explore their own personal projects bringing their ideas to life. Experience and share the excitement of the pottery process from raw clay to the fired kiln.
Course aim
This course is an introduction to hand building pottery techniques for beginners but will also provide an opportunity for those with experience to revisit techniques and develop skills further. To develop self esteem, confidence and personal skills.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Explain the stages clay goes through from its raw state to finished fired piece
- Demonstrate the technique of pinching and coiling
- Show how to join clay together using slip
- Name and use tools to cut, shape and decorate clay
- Select and apply brush on glazes to add colour and pattern to clay work
What else do I need to know?
Fee paying students would be asked to pay £12 for materials at the time of enrolling Please can you bring to each session a suitable pottery apron to wear when working with clay Students may wish to bring their own tools and sketch book to work from
