After her first marriage to King Aethelred, Emma of Normandy was later again married to another king Cnut. We will look at how her life in the tenth century is remarkably well documented and how her life has inspired historical novels.

The course will look at the life and influence of Emma of Normandy who was Queen of England twice.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the main events in the life of Emma of Normandy circa 984 -1062
  • Describe the way in which the government of England was dominated by the activities of Viking raiders
  • Outline the main sources of information about Emma's life
  • Describe how Emma has been portrayed in historical fiction.
