The Remarkable Arts of Spain

Ref: C2346545

Over five weeks we will look at: the earliest evidence of the arts, through to the Romans and the Visigoths, up to 700; Arab and Jewish arts up to c1250; Romanesque and Gothic up to c1500; the Age of Empire 1469 to the 1760s; three outstanding later figures: Goya, Gaudi and Sorolla 1770-1913. While mainly considering art and architecture, we will also touch on literature and music, listening to Spanish composers at the beginning and end of each session.

Course aim

To provide a brief introduction to the particularly Spanish - rather than international - arts in Spain from earliest times to the early 20th century.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify at least two cities with important Roman remains
  • Name an example of especially fine craftsmanship in a Jewish scientific artefact or an Arab building
  • Explain the reason for the number of Romanesque churches across Northern Spain
  • Give at least two examples of artists from the Age of Empire (c1600) and examples of their work
  • Explain what made either Goya, Gaudi, or Sorolla distinctively Spanish

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?
