This course will teach beginners the basics of sewing and garment making. Learners with some experience or returning learners will develop their existing skills. You will produce samples of dressmaking techniques as well as create a simple garment of your choice. New learners will learn how to: Take body measurements, make basic patterns, use the sewing machine, make basic seams, add trimming (lace, ribbons, piping) and insert zips. New and existing learners will create 3 different types of trousers.

To do this course you will need to become a member of the Shama Women's Centre at £10 for the year.
Course aim
The aim of the course is for learners to develop their understanding and skills in the area of sewing and garment making.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for beginners and improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Begin to understand which tools and types of equipment are needed to produce garments.
- Show a basic level of skill in choosing materials and using dressmaking processes and techniques.
- Independently produce a folder of samples.
- Understand the health and safety requirements in a sewing workshop environment.
What else do I need to know?
Basic equipment like sewing machine will be provided however you will need to bring additional materials and tools with you - Lever arch file, fabric for samples and garments, sewing kit- zips, buttons, elastic, threads, needles, pins, shears, pencil, rubber, ruler, measuring tape & drafting paper.
