Many of us deem ourselves to be ‘ordinary’ people, one of many in the sea of millions across the globe. Every person however has a story to tell. Memoir writing is the art of relaying these stories to the masses in an interesting, accessible, and appropriate way. This short course aims to define ‘memoirs’, teach basic tips and approaches, and discuss what may and may not be effective whilst observing a variety of examples. Content includes lecture, exercises, excerpts, and discussion.

Course aim

This short course introduces students to the art of ‘memoir’ writing, helping them choose what to write about and providing tips on how it could be done effectively.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define ‘memoir writing’
  • Identify what may be interesting subject matter for you
  • Discuss and practise the various ways it could be effectively presented
  • Observe and discuss a number of excerpts from published memoirs
  • Give a explanation how creative writing techniques can help improve your craft
