Discovering Towns: their development & rich architectural and cultural heritage

Our towns are a rich source of heritage. They have evolved to grasp all kinds of opportunities and have adapted to all kinds of challenges. this course takes students all over England and sometimes beyond to explore the growth, architecture and culture of many different kinds of towns. It will highlight seaside resorts like Scarborough and Blackpool, spa towns and industrial towns like Nottingham that became industrial centres. It will also look at towns of Roman origin like Chester. The course will include Aachen in Germany that became a major centre in Carolingian times that had cultural influences all over europe and the impact of the Low Countries on towns in the UK will be explored. And no course on urban heritage would be complete without looking at the importance of towns for shopping!

The course is to discover the development of towns and their rich architectural and cultural heritage.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify how towns develop and key factors in their growth.
  • Appreciate how different architectural styles have influenced the appearance of towns
  • Assess different cultures and their impact of towns.
  • Identify how the need for Leisure has influenced seaside and spa towns
  • Explain the impact of Industry on urban development.

You will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources
