20th Century Poetry: Another Menu

Ref: C2345853

If you would like to share your love of a particular poet, or learn more about a name that intrigues you, join this friendly, interactive group. Students will be asked to choose from a menu of twentieth (and a few twenty-first) century poets to be discussed weekly. The 'Menu' will include a wide range, excluding the writers chosen and explored in the previous course (Hardy, Yeats, Auden, Heaney, Imtiaz Dharker and Maya Angelou). Everyone is welcome, including those who need convincing about some of the great names of 'modern' poetry and more recent voices. Revisit old favourites in the company of like-minded poetry lovers, or leave your comfort zone to experience something new!

Course aim

This is a course looking at seven twentieth-century poets, with an element of student choice. It follows on from an earlier course, but new students are welcome and will not be at any disadvantage.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • State some of the most important developments in poetry written and published after 1900.
  • Express an informed preference for one or more of the poets studied.
  • Analyse and discuss poetry with more confidence, using a few technical terms.
  • Say a little about one of the group's choices who has enabled me to 'leave my comfort zone' where poetry is concerned.
  • Name other poets whose work I should like to read.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

This is an online course, so you will need to be able to use Canvas and Zoom. You will need to access the list of poets published on Canvas a few weeks before the start of the course in order to vote for your choices, and subsequently to read the poems to be covered in the next session.
