Japanese Braiding - Kumihimo for Christmas Decorations with Sylvia May

Ref: C2345763

If you are a crafter, a would-be crafter, or just someone who has often wondered what Kumihimo braiding is all about (- or maybe you never heard of it until today...), this little introductory course is for you. I will talk about this Japanese art/craft, include some instructions on making the round and flat looms, and talk about where you can get the ready-made articles. I'll talk about other equipment you will need, or that you could use, show you some Kumihimo 'in action', and teach you a couple of basic but effective techniques to make simple braids you can use for Christmas gifts or decorations. A second course follows immediately with more emphasis on gift making. Note: If you've already started on the path, I will include some variations for the slightly more advanced braider.

Course aim

An introduction to Kumihimo braiding with a Christmas flavour. I will include instructions on making a Kumihimo disc/plate, as well as a couple of simple but effective braids. Variations may be included for the more advanced student as appropriate.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • describe the term Kumihimo and what it refers to
  • make a Kumihimo disk/plate, state how to use them
  • make a simple braid using the Kumihimo disc (round), and talk about how you could use it to make Christmas decorations
  • make a simple braid using the Kumihimo plate (square), and talk about how you could use it to make Christmas decorations
  • list other equipment that you might want or need to practise the art/craft of Kumihimo

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

- In particular please bring 2 pieces of cardboard or other flexible material at least 4" square/round that you can use to make a disk/plate. Alternatively or additionally, you may wish to buy a Kumihimo disc and plate before the course begins. Other equipment will be discussed in class.
