Writing for a Festive Season with Deborah Tyler-Bennett

Ref: C2345739

This course, taught by a published writer, is meant to be a fun look at how you can use festive or seasonal themes or images to create writing. How can you avoid festive cliches, or make these seem your own? Taught by using imagery, paper ephemera, and examples, the course involves discussion, writing and sharing work. If you did the course last year, the images used are different and fresh.

Course aim

This course looks at writing using festive and seasonal imagery. If you did the previous course on this topic last year, the elements used are different.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers
  • New writers may wish to learn from the more experienced writers on the course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Appraise how festive and seasonal images work, discovering how these can be developed in a piece of creative writing.
  • List three key skills in structuring your poem or story.
  • Appraise how juxtaposing images (i.e. snow and fire) can define a piece of writing.
  • Apply imagery from popular items (such as Christmas Cards) and examine how these images relate to creative writing.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

Please bring a writer's notebook (whatever form, digital or paper that may take). If you've any previous writing on the subject - please feel free to bring that along.
