Challenges to the Planet: Sea Level Rise

Ref: C2345734

As the world's climate changes, global warming is causing the world's oceans to rise - but this isn't just because the ice is melting! There are lots of other factors which come into play which this course aims to delve into. As well as understanding the science and mechanics behind sea level rise, this course aims to introduce some of the impacts this will have for humans and the environment across the global ranging from a change in weather patterns, a significant change in marine life, and potentially the start of a new ice age! This course will also look at the very real risk of some low lying islands completely disappearing under the waves as the sea continues to rise, creating some of the world's first environmental refugees - to help illustrate this, the tutor will discuss his experiences of living on the islands of Tuvalu where the highest point above sea level is a very modest 4m.

Course aim

As the earth's climate changes global sea level is beginning to rise. This course aims to look at the science and mechanics of sea level rise, and what that might means for certain parts of the world, especially low-lying islands.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?
