The Geography of Volcanoes and Earthquakes

Ref: C2345732

Have you ever wondered why volcanoes erupt, or what can be done to prepare for earthquakes, or perhaps you want to know what happens if you poke lava with a stick? If so, then this course is for you! Volcanoes and earthquakes are some of the most powerful forces on our planet, but to understand why they occur, we need to take a journey deep inside the earth to discover some of the dynamic processes going on under our feet. This course will take you on a journey to the centre of the earth, and back out again via erupting volcanoes and mighty earthquakes. We will consider how are these giant events caused, how they impact the lives of people living in their shadow, and what (if anything!) can be done about them...

Course aim

To provide an overview of the earth's tectonic nature, and how this leads to the creation of volcanoes and earthquakes - the most powerful events experienced on Earth.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the structure of the Earth - what it's made of, and why this is important.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of plate tectonics and how these fundamental physical processes create some of the planet's most powerful hazards.
  • Identify key feature of active volcanoes and specific earthquakes through a number of case studies and real world examples
  • Demonstrate an understanding of how volcanoes and earthquakes are monitored by scientists.
  • Apply new knowledge of natural hazards to a real-work decision-making exercise.
