So pervasive was Mao's authority between 1949 and 1976 that it impacted upon every aspect of Chinese life. By the time of his death the Chinese Communism he espoused had become personally identified with him as Maoism.

Course aim

An analysis of arguably the most authoritarian ruler of the 20th century, whose social and economic policies far outstripped those of Stalin and Hitler in their lethal consequences

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • appreciate the turbulent character of the China from which Mao emerged as leader
  • understand Mao's essential political and social philosophy
  • grasp why Mao was able to impose himself on the Chinese state and people
  • appreciate the significance of Mao as an international statesman
  • reflect upon Mao's domestic and international legacy
