The course will build on basic map skills to introduce the use of a compass to take a bearing, contours to interpret landscape and the use of techniques to help measure distance in the countryside.
Course aim
An improvers level course for those with some experience with using a map to find a route in the countryside.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This course is for improvers
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Orientate a map using a compass
- Use a compass to take a bearing from a map
- Walk on a bearing accurately across landscape
- Identify the line of a contour in the landscape
- Use a method to judge your distance walked.
What else do I need to know?
You will need: a compass with a base plate (suggested brands, Silva, Recta, Suunto) expect to pay £25-£35 (contact the tutor via Canvas if you need advice) an Ordnance Survey Explorer of any area easily accessible to where you live expect to pay about £9.
