Music in Paris, from Carmen to Les Six

From the 1870s to the 1920s Paris was one of the dynamos of European culture, and of music in particular. Join us to explore its musical life, with works by leading French composers from Bizet and Saint-Saëns to Milhaud and Poulenc. As well as French composers we shall hear exmples of music by composers who visited Paris, or who lived and worked there for significant periods, and visitors such as Stravinsky and Gershwin.

Course aim

From the 1870s to the 1920s Paris was a dynamo of European culture. Join us to explore the city’s musical life, with works by leading French composers including Bizet, Debussy and Poulenc, and visitors such as Stravinsky and Gershwin.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify six significant native French composers active in Paris during the period studied.
  • Assess the importance of three organisations and one individual to the musical life of Paris during this period.
  • Identify three significant visitors to Paris during the period and assess either the influence of the city’s musical life on their work, or their contribution to it.
  • Assess the importance of Paris as a European cultural centre during the period.
