Victorian Papercraft

Experiment with a range of creative paper-craft activities enjoyed by the Victorians in the nineteenth century. Try your hand at creating a unique diorama greeting card, make a selection of celebration crackers, produce your own Victorian style concertina scrap-book to your own design, and develop your practical and creative skills to make a variety of decorative and seasonal items. The course will include investigating images of examples of paper-craft from the nineteenth century and will touch on the important influence the Victorians had on the development of greeting cards.

Course aim

This course will provide an introduction to paper-craft techniques enjoyed by the Victorians in the nineteenth century and provide the opportunity to learn about and enjoy craft activities inspired by the period.

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an understanding of Victorian papercraft in its historical context
  • Create 2D and 3D artwork inspired by Victorian examples of images and resources
  • Identify and apply three folding techniques used in card making in the nineteenth century
  • Identify and apply three different forms of embellishment used in Victorian times
  • Know where to access craft resources for Victorian inspired papercraft

As this course is on-line, you will need an internet connection, speakers, a microphone and a webcam so that you can use our video learning platform, Zoom. You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas
