Our and Other Solar Systems

Ref: C2345385

Why are other planets in our Solar System different to our Earth since they all formed from the same material? How did the Solar System form? We will examine current theories and evidence of planets orbiting other stars. Since this course will be run via Zoom you will be encouraged to observe planets in the night sky.

Course aim

To examine evidence for the formation of the Solar System and how the different planets and the Solar System formed. The course will also look at evidence for other planets and other Solar Systems.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the basic differences between the various planets and the reasons for it
  • Identify aspects of the planetary formation in the night sky.
  • Understand why Earth is in a special position with regard to the necessary conditions for life to evolve
  • Be aware of the existence of other planets outside our Solar system and how we can detect them.

How will I be taught?

What kind of feedback can I expect?

What else do I need to know?

I suggest students obtain a pair of binoculars to help observing. No other materials are required apart from a note pad.
