This course offers an introduction to the vibrant drama of the medieval period and early-sixteenth century. Using surviving documents, contemporary works of art and videos of modern productions, the course explores the origins of dramatic performance in the medieval church before exploring the captivating Mystery Cycle of York. It then focuses on the plays of medieval East Anglia which was very different but just as fascinating and spectacular. Beware- on the way we will encounter many Stage Devils. You have been warned!
