On this course you will learn more about the work of the community interpreter. You will develop your knowledge of public service provision in your local area and the terminology used in different settings. After successfully completing this course, you could progress to an accredited level 2 course.
Course aim
This level 1 course provides an introduction to community interpreting for speakers of other languages. In this course you will develop the skills and knowledge you need to progress to a level 2 accredited course in community interpreting.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- This level 1 course is for bilingual students who are interested in a career in community interpreting or want to find out more about the community interpreter role.
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify the settings in which a community interpreter works
- Discuss how local communities access public services
- Recognise basic public service terminology and the language difficulties which may arise in a community interpreting situation
- List some key differences in public service provision between the UK and another country
- Identify progression routes within the Community Interpreting Pathway

To take part in this course, you need to speak English and an additional language. All learning materials will be provided.
