Why did Diocletian split the Empire in two and then retire to Croatia? This 2 hour taster session will introduce students to the main themes of a 10 week course entitled "Eastern Roman Empire and its Successors". We shall be looking at the reasons for Diocletian's imperial bisection, the cities he founded, and how he unwittingly laid the foundations for the subsequent Byzantine Empire. We shall "tour" the Ancient Near East, looking at the significant upstanding Classical and Byzantine remains of the Decapolis. Among the sites "visited" will be Split Palace, Byzantium/Constantinople, Jerash, Petra, Palmira and Baalbek.
