The Italian language is one of a group of romance languages and is very musical. In this course you will start by learning how to introduce yourself and others, exchanging pleasantries, ordering in a bar, asking where things are and asking directions, shopping, pronunciation and use of "a" and "the".

Course aim

This course aims to introduce you to the beauty of the Italian language with a view to learning the basics in a fun and comfortable environment.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • introduce myself and others and exchange pleasantries including salutations
  • order a drink and a pastry in a bar using correct formalities such as "please" and "thank you"
  • use good pronounciation and explain the use of the definite and indefinite articles
  • ask directions and ask "where is..."
  • do some basic shopping at a greengrocers

We will be working with the book "Buongiorno Italia" by Joseph Cremona (BBC 2nd edition). The ISBN number is 0-563-51945-2 and it is currently available on Amazon. You might want a notebook and pen to make notes but handouts will be uploaded to Canvas.
