Aristocrats in Russian Literature

Aristocrats were the ruling class in Imperial Russia, and the most privileged people in the country except the royal family. This course starts with an introduction to the role of aristocrats in Russian society throughout history up to the Russian Revolution. We continue by reading a variety of texts (in translation) by Pushkin, Tolstoy, Chekhov and Kropotkin. We consider social, political and ethical questions about aristocrats in Russian society inspired by our readings.

Course aim

To get acquainted with a selection 19th century Russian prose texts and consider the role of aristocrats in Russian literature and society.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Consider the role of aristocrats in Russian society and literature
  • Get acquainted with the writings of Pushkin, Tolstoy, Chekhov and Kropotkin
  • Experience Russian literature in translation
  • Discuss a variety of genres including short story, novella, play and memoir
