From the 1880s, a series a painters set out to develop Impressionism into new directions. We will study the art of the Neo-Impressionists Seurat and Signac, the "true painting" of Cézanne, and we will see how Gauguin and van Gogh explored colour’s expressive potential. Throughout the course, we will reflect upon the essential role played by colour and consider it as a common denominator among these artists. We will conclude with studying the emergence of modern sculpture with Rodin and Claudel.
Course aim
This course explores the works of artists such as Seurat, Cézanne, van Gogh, and Gauguin, who came after the Impressionists, and pushed Impressionism in new directions.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Name influential artists who worked in the 1880s, 1890s, and 1900s
- Identify a few key works of art of that period, and analyse them
- Describe and reflect upon the importance of colour for these post-impressionists artists
- Explain how post-impressionist's art is related to Impressionism
