Ever wondered about the history of the British garden? This course will use representations from British art in order to discover elements of gardens from the humble greenhouse to the potting shed. We will look at drawings, illustrations, and paintings from artists throughout history up to modern times. Artists include Stanley Spencer, Leonard Knyff, Marianne North, and Beatrice Parsons.
Course aim
This course aims to provide an introduction to the history of garden designs as recorded in British art.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Identify at least five artists who have represented British gardens in their artwork.
- Discuss a piece of artwork in relation to the garden features represented, stating at least the period shown.
- Be able to identify at least two different art genres used in depicting British gardens.
- Discover 2 facts on how Victorian greenhouses could kill.
- Relate elements of historical garden design to your own/or last garden.
What else do I need to know?
A notebook and pen would be useful to record artists and paintings that you like.
