'How to Read Medieval Documents for Beginners

This course a gentle introduction to reading documents in Latin from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, particularly those useful to local and family historians. In this course you will be introduced to a variety of documents as well as tips for reading them. No knowledge of medieval Latin is required as the necessary vocabulary and techniques for reading medieval handwriting are an essential part of the course.

Course aim

This course is a gentle introduction to reading documents in Latin from the thirteenth to sixteenth centuries, particularly those useful to family and local historians.

  • This course is for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify a variety of classes of manorial and parish document.
  • Decipher names, dates, numbers and common phrases in a variety of medieval documents.
  • Apply palaeography skills from one class of document to another.
  • Translate common phrases in manorial Latin.
