Norfolks Industrial Past

Ref: C2228374

In this course we challenge the view that Norfolk is simply a rural county. The course tells the stories and analyses the evidence of Norfolk's industrial past between 1700 and 1950, from textiles to heavy engineering and the spread of service industries, and though the study of written and pictorial sources, and evidence from the built environment, we will develop our understanding of the surprising variety and scale of industry both in Norwich and throughout the county.

Course aim

Norfolk is usually seen as agricultural and rural, and that the industrial revolution largely passed it by. In this course we consider the development of industry in the county between 1700 and 1950, and relate it to surviving sites.
