Special Effects in Film and Costume in Film

Ref: C2228372

Examining the art and craft of film: In the first five weeks we'll make an in-depth study of over a century of special effects creativity in cinema, from the earliest simple trick shots to cutting-edge computer-generated images, looking at miniature cities, giant apes, animated antics, spaceships, skeletons, and digitally de-aged actors. Then in the second five weeks we’ll examine how the role of the cinematic costume designer can be crucial in making or breaking a whole film. Costumes can evoke bygone eras, tell us hidden truths about characters, make outlandish otherworldly futures believable, and so much more. The course makes use of a wide variety of clips and stills from classic cinema and some overlooked masterpieces, and is based around an informal discussion format.
