The second half of the seventeenth century saw the creation of some of the greatest works of Dutch painting. We will explore the particular genius of Vermeer and also look at other genre painters of the time. We will examine the extraordinary landscapes of Ruisdael, his followers and contemporaries, and see how Italian light transformed landscape in the works artists such as Cuyp. Still life was another specialism that flourished at the time, evolving throughout the century to reach a peak in lavish and colourful displays. We will also look briefly at architecture which was in one of its most splendid phases.

Course aim
A survey of the classical age of Dutch painting. We will examine the work of Vermeer and de Hooch in genre painting, the landscapes of Ruisdael and Cuyp and much more.
