This course will consider the development of Islamic architecture up to 1700, looking at a variety of buildings from across the Muslim world ranging from India to Spain and Turkey to Morocco. We shall consider the geographical, historical,religious and cultural factors which have created a variety of regional styles and a distinctively Islamic architecture.

This course will provide an introduction to Islamic architecture, looking at a range of buildings across the Islamic world and considering regional styles and their religious, cultural and geographical contexts.

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Recognise and identify a number of significant buildings
- Discuss the religious and cultural factors which have contributed to a distinctively Islamic style
- Recognise and identify regional and cultural building styles
- Describe the basic characteristics and arrangements of certain building types, especially the mosque
