Who were the Levellers?

The mid-seventeenth century was a time of unimaginable change: new ideas spread rapidly as printing took off, people rebelled against social conventions, political certainties were turned upside down and the king was overthrown. Amidst this turmoil emerged the Levellers, calling for an end to monarchy, support for the poor and votes for (nearly) all men - while women Levellers demanded rights for women too! The "True Levellers" (or Diggers) went further, digging up land and calling for property to be hold in common. The Levellers continue to inspire, confuse and challenge people today. Some historians say they were an organised group, others that they were a rather vague and broad-based movement. We will be looking at the evidence, asking who these people were and what motivated them. We'll read writings of Levellers such as John Lilburne, Katherine Chidley and Gerard Winstanley. We'll ask some crucial questions: what did the Levellers achieve, and what can we learn from them today?

Course aim

The Levellers challneged social and political conventions amidst the turmoil of civil war. This is a chance to ask who they were, explore their writings, consider what they achieved and see what relevance they have for us today.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for a group of around 15 students studying in a live video-learning platform conference and an online digital learning environment platform from the comfort of your own home.
  • This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones.   • No skills or experience needed
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Summarise the basic facts about the emergence and activities of the Levellers in the late 1640s.
  • Summarise some of the Levellers' key arguments and explain how they were related to their historical context.
  • Make an argument about what the Levellers did or did not achieve.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • You will also need access to the internet outside of your sessions. You could do this using a smart phone, tablet, laptop or a desktop computer (at home or through a library etc.).
  • You will need a personal email address to join the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas so that you can receive resources, record your progress and achievement and to work with others and share ideas.   • You might find it helpful to bring a notebook and pen, but this is not essential.
