We will experiment with some of the basic principles of drawing- line and tone, proportion and perspective, texture and colour. You will be encourages to try out different styles in a fun and supportive class. Materials will be provided.
Course aim
Come and learn to enjoy the process of drawing. Learn how to see as an artist and take home skills that will enable you to create your own artworks.
Do I need any particular skills or experience?
- No skills or experience needed
- This course is for beginners
By the end of the course I should be able to:
- Be able to analyse how a drawing has been made- What materials has the artist used? Begin to have an opinion and make independent decisions about drawings and artworks- How does the composition, style and use of colour and light inform the subject matter, mood or the rendering of the piece ?
- View artworks by others in a positive and informed way by practicing giving and receiving feedback and by being exposed to some key vocabulary relating to talking about art.
- Feel less self conscious about drawing. Be able to enjoy the activity of drawing independently.
- Have practiced some basic drawing techniques which incorporate line and tone, proportion and perspective, texture and colour
- Have skills and ideas which can be kept and could be practiced and developed at home or in the workplace.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
- There will be small homework set but this will usually be a very open task which will not involve much time and won't involve any costly materials.
What kind of feedback can I expect?
- You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
- You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
- You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
What else do I need to know?
- All materials will be provided
Pre-course work, reading and information sources
- No pre course work is required but it would be nice if you can think of or bring along a copy of a drawing you like. If you do this, think about why you like it!
What can I do next?
- Progress to another WEA course
- I hope that this course will allow students to feel more confident to be able to enjoy drawing. They might continue it as their own well being activity or to use it as a starting point to practice and develop their own artistic style.
