British Archaelogy form the Iron Age to 1066

In considering the lasting impact the period between the Roman and Norman Conquests had on the development of modern Britain, the following questions will be addressed: What did the Romans do for Britain? How Dark were the Dark Ages? Did King Arthur ever exist? How civilised were the Vikings? There will be ample opportunity to handle artifacts associated with each of the archaeological periods discussed.

Course aim

To demonstrate the impact that newcomers and invaders had on the shaping of modern Britain in the period between the Roman and Norman Conquests.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the cultural legacy left by the Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings in modern day Britain
  • Understand how place names can identify settlement origins.
  • Know the typology of archaeological artifacts associated with the period between the Later Iron Age and Norman conquest.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
