Family History - Masterclass Developers

Ref: C3677292

Join our masterclass to refresh and extend your knowledge and experience of sources for researching people and places. Most records were not created for the purposes that family and local historians use them for. Website advice and manipulation guidance will be included, optional events and potential project work. Students will be invited to share hints and tips, recording skills and research strategies whilst reviewing what's new and featured in subject dedicated magazines.

Course aim

To work chronologically backwards through records for both family and local history, look at the information they provide and considering complimentary sources. Web manipulation skills and the opportunity to develop a project piece will be included.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Illustrate three major changes in the layout of Parish Registers, listing the relevant dates and Acts of Parliament, as well as specifying three reasons why a further change in 1837 is important in facilitating accurate research
  • Give details, for two areas of personal interest, details of Parish Register collections with original images online, one area with only transcripts online, one area where neither applies as well as one key guidance publication
  • List at five types of records which may have been kept in a Parish Chest, provide guidance on their current location(s) and how some elements of this material may be found online
  • Suggest signposts for identifying Non-Conformist ancestors, list one series of publications which list holding repositories and provide examples of how their content differs from the Church of England's registers
  • Continue or commence work on a brief illustrated narrated account of a Heritage Plaque which has connections to my local or family history research. The image of a referenced original image and ancestral tree will be included.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Guidance on personal research projects.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Pre-course reading is required: resources will be made available to you using the WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas:
  • It is anticipated that students will be familiar with most sources from the present back to 1837.
