This course will enable you to take the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language offered by Signature, the leading awarding body for qualifications in Deaf and Deaf blind communication. At the end of the qualification, you will be able to: understand and use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL; take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL; give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL; plus give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL

Course aim

This qualification is designed to teach you to communicate with Deaf people in British Sign Language (BSL) on a range of topics that involve simple, everyday language use. You will gain basic skills and confidence in production and reception of BSL.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

  • This is for those who want to learn and gain a qualification in basic language skills to communicate simple conversations with deaf people

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a limited range of simple words and sentences in BSL
  • Take part in simple, everyday conversations in BSL during class
  • Give and follow simple directions or instructions in BSL
  • Give and follow simple familiar statements or descriptions in BSL

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Activities may include tutor presentation, small group work, working in pairs, class discussions, short tasks and research

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Clip file, paper and pen. An essential textbook you need to bring: ‘Let’s Sign Dictionary’
