Pevsner's Buildings of England - A walk around Dursley, Gloucestershire

Explore aspects of history and architecture through the work of the architectural historian, Nikolaus Pevsner, in his Buildings of England series and consider perceptions of townscapes past and present. Learn about the buildings suggested as the most significant examples in the town. Students will be given information on the perambulation which they can conduct either after the talk or at any other time. Students will have opportunities both during the session and after to comment on selection and descriptions by the author as well as identify changes that have happened since publication and any omissions or corrections that they feel should be included.

Course aim

This course aims focuses on the buildings considered by architectural historians as the most significant and considers perceptions of the built environment past and present.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Know why the Pevsner Buildings of England Guides were produced
  • Identify 5 local buildings included in the Pevsner guides
  • Compare and contrast one building with the guides written description
  • Feedback and comment on current content and any changes

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • No reading or preparation is essential; however you may wish to obtain a copy of the Pevsner Buildings of England - Gloucestershire 1: The Cotswolds (2002) please see above for Special Offer.
