Health Tai Chi is an Exercise Prescription that is designed to help with many age related diseases. It also acts as a prevention when practiced on a regular basis. The gentle exercise can be done either standing or sitting and all ages are welcomed. Tai Chi has significant improvement in bone density, fibromyalgia, Parkinson's disease, COPD, osteoporosis and many more. These gentle exercise programmes are used as an alternative prevention/intervention tool to promote healthy living and healthy aging. Tai Chi will also bring balance and harmony to each individual regardless of age or ability. It promotes wellbeing and helps with mental clarity. The course also enjoys a very active social side along with the practice there is also time to watch demonstrations, collect handouts and have light discussions whilst enjoying afternoon tea.

Course aim

Health Tai Chi is designed to help individuals manage their health in a way that will prevent and relieve many common chronic disease symptoms. This can include COPD,pain, osteoporosis, Parkinson's, fibromyalgia, falls prevention, lung function.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This is a live lecture delivered by a subject specialist in an online webinar video learning platform. You will need to be able to access the internet on a device with speakers or earphones.   • This course is for beginners

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List at least three benefits of exercise.
  • Practice a number of exercises which can then be carried out in the comfort of your own home.
  • Identify how exercise can show an improvement in sleep pattern and relaxation
  • Carry out a number of exercises to assist in clearing that brain fog that we all have from time to time

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • its will be a learning through fun and checking understanding. Each student will be given enough time to develop and grow whilst enjoying the movements and issued with handouts during each session

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • There will be lots of material and information available to use also there will be many opportunities to enjoy a short film on the movements and how beneficial they are for maintaining good health

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Everything will be explained in a manner that everyone can enjoy. There will be plenty of leaflets issued and discussion at each point to ensure it is all clear to each participant

What can I do next?

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Tai Chi has many levels and it would be a great opportunity to extend the knowledge and maintain the level of movements in order to live a healthy life.
