This course will allow students to develop ways to deal with negative interactions with others, including being assertive and managing their emotional responses.

Course aim

Students will look at ways to cope with negative interactions with others, including assertiveness techniques and emotional management techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Define the term 'setting boundaries'
  • Describe at least 1 way to be assertive
  • Define empathy
  • Describe at least 1 way to manage emotional responses when interacting with others

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA’s digital learning platform, Canvas will be used to provide resources or to support lessons, enable assessment, provide learner feedback and for other activities for individuals away from the course.   • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be useful for students to bring a notebook and pen to the session.
