Couples, Rivals or Muses in Modern Art

This course examines collaboration between such artists as Dora Maar and Picasso, Paula Rego and Victor Willing, Gerda Wegener and Lilie EIbe and many others to enable one to see the transformative impact one artist had on the other. Through careful selection and showing juxtaposed art from such artists it will be clear what it is to be a modern couple or rival in modern art. the images shown and discussed will capture the pulse of lives fully lived.

Course aim

This course presents an account of modern art not purely as a result of 'solo genius' but through collaboration and mutual influence that sprung from associating with others.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand how homo and hetero relationships in modern art influence design and art in the modern period.
  • chart the pursuit of freedom and artistic innovation gained especially in the early part of the 20th century though relationships with each other
  • The 20th century had two world wars, a Spanish civil war and for a time Fascism dominated both during the second world war and the longer lasting dictatorships in the Iberian peninsula. Students will be able to learn how these and other political issues effected the art coming from these artistic relationships.
  • learn how incredible art happens when we allow ourselves the space to share and collaborate.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
