This course will enable the learner to learn basic art techniques and combine this with experimentation with model making materials such as wire and modroc to express issues related to modern housing

Course aim

Students will learn basic art techniques and experiment with model making techniques, modroc, papier mache and colour to express issues related to modern housing

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • No experience necessary although students may have an interest and enthusiasm for Art and Sculpture.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of proportion, perspective and scale in drawing and painting
  • Complete a 3D model to express an issue
  • Complete a design for the model using tone
  • Reflect on my strengths and skills to help me make informed choices when planning my next steps
  • Develop my physical, mental and spiritual well being and social skills

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Students will be asked to undertake homework which will be discussed and evaluated at the start of each lesson

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Student progress is monitored and feedback given throughout course as to achievement of learner outcomes

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Although there are materials provided, students may want to bring an A2 sketchbook and pencil .

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Students may want to research artists and sculptors who have expressed issues related to housing and landscape in their work

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Students may want to access a foundation course or 3D / Sculpture course at University or another provider.
