Audio Portraits: Mobile Phone Storytelling

The Audio Portraits course will examine photography and audio production to produce short compelling stories all made on your mobile phone. We will be using a combination of photographs,audio and text. We will take our inspiration from exhibitions at Tate Liverpool. This is a practical course which explores ideas of photographic portraiture, audio interviews and story telling methods. A portrait could be an image of a hand, an object or a landscape. An audio piece could be an interview, a monologue or sound design.

Course aim

The Audio Portrait course will introduce basic principles of mobile phone photography and audio production to produce short compelling stories all made on a smart phone.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • This course is for people with little spoken English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • How to take a better images using your mobile phone camera.
  • How to record quality audio onto your mobile phone.
  • How to storyboard and manage your media project.
  • How to edit images and audio recordings within media applications to create a short stories in the form of an audio portrait - (MP4).
  • How to upload your completed audio portrait to social media in order to reach a chosen audience.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You need a mobile phone and phone headset or earphones which usually comes with your phone. You will need to download several free mobile phone apps including KineMaster, SnapSeed and a mobile phone recording app. We will discuss this in class.
