The Concepts of Evil in Modern Management

Evil is a disturbing concept. The idea that evil exists in a modern 'rational' world is even more disturbing. The idea that evil exists as a direct result of the way we organise our civilization is surely absurd - or is it? Students will explore the dynamics of evil and 'Administrative Evil' in a modern corporations and public service institutions. What do we mean by evil? How does this impact on the world the administration of public services and business in modern organisations? How do we identify the hidden structure behind these dynamics and look at the challenge of tackling these damaging issues that have and continue to cause harm and even death?

Course aim

This course will introduce students to the concepts of 'Administrative Evil'. Exploring the way the organisation of business and institutions can create conditions where good people do bad things.

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the basic concepts of 'Administrative Evil' in modern organisations.
  • Understand how to identify the hidden structures behind 'Administrative Evil'.
  • Be able to discuss how the issues created by 'Administrative Evil' can be challenged

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • Materials for note taking will be useful.
