Activism in Sheffield is not just something where we have a proud history, it is something that continues today, with both National and Local campaigns. This course will bring the radical history of the city up to date and give a taste of the campaigns that were key parts of the modern city. From the Poll Tax to the Battle of Orgreave & Nuclear Disarmament to Street Trees, find out more about the campaigns that are still part of today's vibrant radical city.

Course aim

Activism in Sheffield is not just something where we have a proud history, it is something that continues today, both Nationally and Locally. Lean more about the city's radical campaigning since 1950 until the present day and be part of that story.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand Sheffield's unique role in Activism
  • Understand the basics of the activist campaigns in the city since 1950
  • Be able to discuss the role of media and particularly social media in modern activism & understand the role of activism in the modern world

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Materials for note taking would be useful
