Introduction to Mindfulness

Have you ever wondered what Mindfulness is, how it can improve your mental well-being, put you back in control in your life and increase your general happiness? This introduction to Mindfulness session will answer these questions and many more The session is relaxed and informal, you will learn about the benefits of Mindfulness, where the practice came from and how we can use it to discover our own minds. You will participate in seated mindfulness meditation sessions, breathing exercises and group discussions. Following this session, you may decide to attend the full programme

Course aim

To provide an introduction to Mindfulness with a view to improving your overall mental wellbeing and general happiness and an ability to bring the practice into your daily life

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • State what Mindfulness is
  • Practice a guided 3 minute meditation
  • Breathe to make life easier when my stomach is tied in knots
  • Choose a "mudra' or hand position that works for me when meditating
  • Understand how to see familiar things with a "beginners mind"

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
