This course is aimed at people who genuinely want to commence yoga but may be worried about how to begin safely and gently. May have other symptoms and conditions e.g. depression, anxiety, headaches knee/hip/neck pain, high/low blood pressure. Specifically aimed at people who are generally less flexible or have ME, MS, CFS fibromyalgia, joint or mobility problems. It is a gentle course adapted to each learners need led by a experienced and well qualified tutor. Supportive equipment will be available. Students learn various techniques to quiet an active mind and restore a good sleep pattern ie., meditation, breathing, postures, relaxation.

Course aim

To lead the students to gently work on improving their coordination, strength and flexibility using their own muscles and body weight with the help of specialist yoga equipment to adapt to their needs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for improvers
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • It would be advisable to talk to your GP to find out if this sort of activity is suitable to your medical needs.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the meaning and philosophy of Yoga.
  • Use simple limbering movements to lubricate joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons to keep them healthy. Use equipment and aids to enhance and support varied yoga postures (asanas) Yoga postures adapted to individual needs and mobility
  • Understand mindfullness and be able to use breath, imagery, sound and bodily sensations to calm the mind.
  • Develop breathing practices (Pranayama)
  • Work towards building their confidence and self esteem.

How will I be taught?

  • Practice at home the postures learnt to support your learning as it would be helpful in improving and maintaining your health. Record your progress in a diary and discuss with your tutor. See point 5 above

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Keep weight in check incorporating all that you have learnt during the sessions. Will incorporate ways to reduce their weight through mindfulness eating, stress reduction techniques. Weight will be checked at the beginning, middle and at the end to assess whether they have lost/gained weight.

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
