Creative Textile Art

Explore a variety of ways to create textile art including the use of collage, hand and machine stitching, applique, fabric dyeing and batik. We will also make felt, create a simple card loom and use wool and other materials to create a small weaving.

Course aim

This course will provide an introduction to a selection of textile techniques to enable students to explore ways of creating their own textile art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Select an image and create a paper and fabric collage from that image
  • Use cold water dyes and some tie dye techniques to dye natural fabric
  • Use a variety of hand and machine stitches to embellish fabric
  • Create a picture on fabric using silk painting and batik techniques
  • Make felt using merino fleece and a wet felting method

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Materials are provided but it would be helpful to bring a book with blank pages (A4 is fine). Also a pen would be useful as you may wish to take notes

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
