From a range of artists including Walter Sickert, David Bomberg, the Bloomsbury Group, Winifred Nicholson, JD Fergusson, Joan Eardley and Lucian Freud , we explore innovative contributions to British art of the twentieth century. No experience necessary - just a lively, open-minded interest in art!

Course aim

This course explores the work of some British artists of the twentieth century

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognize some of the different approaches to colour, line, composition, volume and perspective of the artists under discussion.
  • Identify some of the different approaches to, and choice of, subject matter - including landscape, still life, portraiture and modern life.
  • Understand some of the key social, cultural and political influences on the work under discussion
  • Recognize the significance of some of these developments in the broader context of British art of the twentieth century

How will I be taught?

  • Tutor-led presentation followed by group tasks when students analyse and interpret colour copies of paintings

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Continuous monitoring of progress will occur during group tasks and feedback of findings

What else do I need to know?

  • A folder would be useful to store handouts given at each session

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Booklists and relevant website details will be given at each session
