Drama and Performing in a Theatre

This course is a practical one, exploring different styles of acting, scripted and improvised. The group works towards a final performance to be held at Valley Theatre itself at the end of the course and performed by the students themselves (although students may also take on stage management or non acting roles if preferred) . The final performance will utilise all the knowledge the students have gained during the course about performing in a theatre.

Course aim

This course aims to give a basic grounding in the many disciplines involved in performing in a theatre. Including acting, directing, writing and back-stage jobs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Students will recognise some of the techniques of well-known playwrights
  • Students will be able to recognise key aspects of the rehearsal process, such as blocking, which play a part in the process of putting a play onto the stage.
  • Students will understand the difference between scripted and improvised acting
  • Students will gain an understanding of some techniques actors use to learn lines.
  • Students will understand the role played by sound, lighting and stage management in a performance.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Sensible clothing for taking part in rehearsals..eg comfortable shoes/trainers

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
