Improvers' Printmaking

Improvers printmaking is a practical course supporting individual design developments in printmaking techniques. Perfect to expand existing skills in a supportive environment, with hands on expert advice. This particular course will focus on intaglio drypoint printmaking techniques and gum arabic transfer. The course will be a part-time course comprising of 2 hour sessions run over 7 weeks.

Course aim

This practical improvers course aims to further expand students knowledge of intaglio printmaking. The course aims to support students with a basic knowledge of printmaking in their own design developments and creative responses.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Some prior experience required, preferably completion of WEA Introduction to Printmaking course.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore the technique of drypoint etching using the knowledge acquired in the workshop sessions; experimenting with design development, combining other print methods from existing knowledge.
  • Print from my plates recognising good practice in 'inking up' the plate and using a printing press.
  • Interact with others through shared critiques, discussing good practice and problem solving.
  • Demonstrate good design knowledge in the development of your imagery.
  • Understand the basic principles of Intaglio printmaking.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Students will be asked to provide their own paper and some print sundries. An equipment list will be provided on the first session.
