Supported Learning Gardening and Horticulture

In order to promote Health and Well being students will take opportunities to work learning through a hands on horticultural and environmental programme which includes plant knowledge, propagation skills and garden maintenance programmes and to enhance everyday life experiences and connect with the natural world through plants, wildlife and friendships.

This course is run by the WEA, working in partnership with East Surrey College delivering Adult Learning across the East Surrey area.

Course aim

To promote Health and Well being through hands on gardening, horticultural knowledge and a closeness to the natural world.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Suitable for supported learners accompanied by their support workers as necessary. New learners may need to visit before committing.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • plant a variety of seeds
  • care for and monitor their growth prior to planting on
  • identify a range of seasonal spring plants
  • undertake a variety of garden maintenance tasks
  • use a range of tools, returning them to store safely and clean

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Gardeners are expected and encouraged and take part in recording their tasks in the end of session diary

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • Essential appropriate clothing for all weather outside work and suitable well fitting waterproof personal gardening gloves. A packed lunch THIS APPLIES TO SUPPORT STAFF AS WELL AS LEARNERS.
