What is Makaton? It is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech, in spoken word order. Learn 40+ signs and symbols to get you started with Makaton

Course aim

Introducing Makaton, where the need for it arises and basic signs and symbols that will be most useful.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • The Makaton Taster session is for people interested in learning about Makaton especially those working with early years and for people who need a basic vocabulary.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Introduce Makaton into daily interactions with other adults and children
  • know of further Makaton training available.
  • demonstrate an understanding of using Makaton in a practical manner.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Students will be given information on how to progress to further Makaton Workshops to learn the Makaton Core Vocabulary such as The Beginners Workshop for Parents and Carers
