Gardening for Pleasure

This is a classroom-based course to introduce participants to new areas of garden-related topics, and to broaden their knowledge of plants and gardening techniques. We will examine some of the science, history and culture of plants and gardening, as well as identifying seasonal tasks and how to perform them. Topics include: Seasonal Tasks in the Garden, Cottage Gardens, Greenhouse Gardening, Gardening for Cut Flowers, Orchids for the House, Herbs through the Millennia, Spring Propagation Exercise, and Succulents.

Course aim

To explore an agreed programme of topics relating to gardening. To provide a forum for discussion of learners' gardening questions and problems.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and carry out seasonal tasks in the garden
  • Undertake the spring propagation exercise
  • Produce flowers for cutting
  • Carry out the Spring Propagation Exercise

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Internet access is helpful but not essential

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • For less experienced gardeners, some reading around the subject, perhaps with gardening magazines, is helpful but not essential.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Subject to student numbers, this course is ongoing, looking at different aspects of gardening each term.
